Design decisions were made based on living in this house well past retirement; creating a more contemporary kitchen, both in its look and function; increasing the amount of light; and being able to entertain family and friends easily.

To achieve these wishes, major structural changes to the house were necessary. A load-bearing wall between the kitchen and the living room was removed and the cabinets were set into the wall. To carry the ceiling weight, support beams were added in the attic. An innovative design feature wass to add a coffered celing with recessed lighting in the kitchen between the new support beams.

These decisions increased the amount of light and usable space with a more efficient traffic pattern.
